Start with separate political questions

A person can hold economically interventionist views and socially conservative views, support strong constitutional checks while preferring national sovereignty, or combine market preferences with strict environmental limits. A single score can hide those combinations.

Treat uncertainty honestly

Political questions are not always easy, and respondents may lack information or feel genuinely divided. Treating “not sure” as if it meant the midpoint of an ideological scale can create false precision.

Use labels as interpretation, not verdicts

Ideology labels can help people navigate political language, but they should not erase the underlying disagreements. Two people can receive a similar broad description while differing substantially on authority, ownership, nationhood or ecology.
